Grad Interview prep
-
How is everyone preparing for their graduate program interviews? I feel like the application was quite comprehensive in covering every aspect of my profile so I am a little lost on what else I can prepare for? Can anybody share insights they got from their own research?

I believe you should prepare for standard behavioral questions as well apart from everything else. Interviews vary depending on the personality and preference of the interviewer a lot. Some may set up a rapport from the getgo and help you take control of the interview to assess what is important to you. Others may talk more about the program and share what they have to offer in return. In both cases you should be clear about what you “bring” to the program and what they “offer” you. Having standard answers for behavioral questions will also help you in not only showcasing you reflect on your actions but also emphasize your ability to think on your feet. Not to mention additional confidence. Wishing you the best of luck for your interviews!

In my experience some programs also ask technical questions (masters) to assess whether you have the skills you claim to have. As long as you have been honest in your claims throughout the application, I think you should be fine. I would recommend reviewing interview tips on program youtube pages or asking current students and searching through popular platforms to get a sense of what you can expect. Interviews can vary greatly from program to program.

I personally think this is a way for the admissions committee to get to know your personality and assess program fit. Being yourself and authentic in your interaction is super important. You should know your research, resume and SOP well to be read to address any deep dive questions you are asked.

I think for CS specifically, they mostly ask you to explain your research, try to get a feel of your level of involvement and maturity in handling the research process, and assess your motivation and future interests. I heard some programs interview just to assess your English speaking skills, while others actually want to verify information on your CV and SOP etc.

In my experience with Ph.D. interviews, it is primarily to get a sense of how you interact with the PIs, the level of maturity in your responses, and clarity in your future goals and ambitions is essential. Other than that, as others mentioned, you need to demonstrate a strong link between your interests and what the program/professor has to offer. Ph.D. is a very serious commitment, and you need to demonstrate you are taking this decision after due consideration. I would recommend having good questions prepared to ask before the interview as well as some follow-ups to showcase you know the program well and have specific and thoughtful questions.
