  • GRE
  • M mutahar.ali

In my experience (restricted to applying to Computer Science graduate programs, particularly within the top 100 universities), I found that most PhD programs have the GRE as either optional or not required. For MS programs, while a few still required the GRE when I applied for Fall 2023, the majority had it listed as optional.

As for whether it’s worth the effort to take the GRE, it can be beneficial to have a strong GRE score, especially if you need to compensate for a lower GPA. However, the decision ultimately depends on the specific requirements and expectations of the programs you’re targeting.

  • F1 Visa Financial Documentation
  • M mutahar.ali

    Hello everyone,

I'm currently preparing to apply for an F1 visa for graduate studies in the US, and I'm seeking some advice. I've heard conflicting information about the financial documentation required for the visa application. Can anyone provide clarity on what exactly needs to be included in the financial documentation for an F1 visa application? Additionally, should the funds be in an account solely under my name, or is it acceptable if they're in an account owned by a family member or friend?

    Thank you for your assistance!

  • PhD Stipend and Taxes
  • M mutahar.ali

    Hello everyone!

As an incoming international PhD student, my funding package includes fellowship support. Alongside tuition coverage, the fellowship provides a monthly stipend and a one-time fellowship award.

    I have the following questions:

Post-Tax Stipend: I understand that the stipend amount mentioned is pre-tax. To effectively plan my finances, I need to determine the net amount after deductions for taxes. What is the typical tax percentage or amount deducted from a PhD student's stipend? Is this dependent on the state?

Filing taxes: Is the tax deducted automatically from the stipend? Do I need to file taxes at the end of the financial year?

Taxation on Award: Will the fellowship award also be subject to taxation?

Any advice on managing finances as a PhD student would also be appreciated. Thank you very much!

  • Grad Interview prep
  • H hamid10hn

In my experience some programs also ask technical questions (masters) to assess whether you have the skills you claim to have. As long as you have been honest in your claims throughout the application, I think you should be fine. I would recommend reviewing interview tips on program youtube pages or asking current students and searching through popular platforms to get a sense of what you can expect. Interviews can vary greatly from program to program.

  • GRE Prep Plan
  • H hamid10hn

I was in the same boat a while ago. I utilized Gregmat’s 1 month plan. I think it is very well distributed in terms of workload and will ensure you comprehensively prepare for each element of the test. You can focus on Verbal or Quant based on your program needs/personal prep so far.

  • Ranking criteria for program selection
  • H hamid10hn

I think your ranking should depend on your personal needs. Are you looking for professors with expertise in a niche area? Are you only concerned about immediate job outcomes or a transition to PHD from a research-based masters? What does your financial situation look like? What kind of stipend/support do you need and what are the chances of getting it in any given uni? This should help you develop your own ranking.
